Senior Moments encourages the active participation of seniors in the arts, providing classes in theatre and at least one public performance a season, written and produced by seniors for seniors. Meetings and performances will encourage creativity and provide a platform for senior issues and a celebration of the aging process.
The above statement defines the original mission of Senior Moments: to bring seniors out of their homes and into the community through participation in the arts. Over the years, Senior Moments has developed an outreach program that now takes theatre into the homes and communities of seniors throughout New England.
In the fall of 2003, in partnership with the New Hampshire Risk Reduction Task Force, Senior Moments presented a play titled, Help Me I'm Falling and I Can't Get Up!, a series of skits dealing with safety issues related to seniors. The project included 12 performances around the state in 2004 and the group continues to offer this play to interested organizations. Help Me... was funded by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and the Endowment for Health.
In 2004, with the help of grants from the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation (a branch of the NH Charitable Foundation) and the United Way of the Greater Seacoast, Senior Moments performed for and worked with senior groups in assisted living homes, senior centers, day out programs, and senior housing.
Upcoming performances by Senior Moments both at the Rep and on tour can be found here.
Senior Moments in partnership with Seacoast Mental Health Center in Portsmouth, the state REAP (Referral, Education, Assistance and Prevention) Program, and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Injury Prevention Program, developed a presentation titled "There is a Tomorrow" skits focusing on depression and suicide prevention for seniors. This project was funded by New Hampshire Council on the Arts, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and the New Hampshire Endowment for Health.
In September 2007 Senior Moments, in partnership with the New Hampshire Pain Initiative, will launch its newest educational program titled "I Don't Have Time for the Pain." The skits will explain the myths and treatment of chronic pain. 15 performances are scheduled around the state. The Northern Arts Alliance will work with Senior Moments to help present the play in the North Country. This project will be funded in part by the New Hampshire Council on the Arts.
Senior Moments, with over 100 performances (and counting!) has appeared at the New Hampshire Conference on Aging, Maine Senior Expo, AARP, and National Association of the Mentally Ill, New Hampshire Public Radio, as well as a score of community groups and organizations throughout New England.
When they are not touring, Senior Moments meets weekly, writing and preparing its important new work. On July 15th and 16th, the group presented its 7th original play, a murder mystery without a murder called Where There's a Will. The Oz Nursing Home, a repeat of our SOLD OUT 2006 show, was presented in September on the Rep's mainstage.
