The passionate Wendela struggles with a developing body with mysteries she can’t understand, and that the adults in her life have no problem keeping from her. The brilliant, charismatic young Melchior knows adults are hiding the secrets of sex, and helps his nervous friend Moritz and others understand puberty and all its confusing complications. A chance meetings in the woods changes all of their lives forever.
Only one makes it out alive.
For one weekend only, Seacoast Repertory Theatre is proud to present eight-time Tony Award-winner, Spring Awakening. Bristling with an intense and acclaimed pop-rock score, seen through the mad lens of the Mad Men of Oopsie Daisy Inc., and cast with some of the most talented performers, artists, and musicians on the Seacoast, Spring Awakening is an intense exploration of repression, rebellion, sex, and self-discovery. Join us for a masterful musical depiction of a journey we all take growing up. Stunning, outrageous, and relatable, Spring Awakening delighted audiences on Broadway in 2016, and is set to hit the Seacoast in August 2017.
You have never seen a telling like this before, and you won’t again.
Because of the intensity of the subject matter, and the flexible artistry of the award-winning script and score, we thought Spring Awakening would be best told through the unique lens Red Light Series, and would be most aptly told by The Mad Men of Oopsie Daisy Inc., Brandon James and Ben Hart, the duo behind Seacoast Rep smash hits Avenue Q, and Reefer Madness and Seacoast sensation Mad Haus. Join us on our historic, intimate stage in the heart of Downtown Portsmouth.
The duo have assembled a team of multidisciplinary artists for cast, crew, and band, and have removed the constraints of time and setting for a truly relevant take on this classic – a coming of age that’s true to the script but also to the realities of growing up in the digital age. Childhood, adulthood, puberty, sex, access to information – everything has changed. What does it mean to grow up in this new world? What realities haven’t changed?
The team will be utilizing technology, new and old, in exciting and unique ways to tell the story.
Contains some adult content. Spring Awakening runs one weekend only August 17th – August 20th. Thursday 7:30. Friday 8:00. Saturday 8:00. Sunday 2:00.
