Why study theatre and the arts?

The arts are used to achieve a multitude of human purposes: to present issues and ideas, to teach or persuade, to entertain, to decorate or please. Becoming literate in the arts helps students of all ages have a better understanding of their surroundings. By teaching in and through the arts, we increase the potential of every student and complement learning in other disciplines. The arts are vital in building understanding between and among cultures, past and present. The arts teach tolerance and celebrate diversity in an ever-changing world. Theater elevates our consciousness and is indispensable to the freedom of inquiry and expression. Theatre allows the participants (both performers and audience) to ask “what if”?
